New 2026 MG4 could be the First EV with a Semi Solid State Battery

SAIC recently started production of the new 2026 MG4 EV. SAIC has hinted that it could have a semi-solid-state battery. SAIC has a collaboration with REPT Battero for its EV batteries.

With the MG4 struggling in its home market against the likes of the BYD Dolphin, VW ID.3, and Nio Firefly, SAIC is looking to recover the lost ground with the new MG4.

The new MG4 EV will be open to orders from 5th Aug, 2025, and prices are also expected to be revealed then. The present model starts at RMB 139,800 (USD 19,490) in China.

New 2026 MG4 Specs and Performance

Not many details have been revealed so far regarding the technical specifications and performance of the new 2026 MG4 EV. What’s known so far is that the base model shall be an RWD powered by a single 120 kW motor capable of reaching a top speed of 170 km/h.

The car comes with REPT Battero’s LFP battery with a maximum range of 537 km, and SAIC has also hinted at the fact that it could even have a semi-solid-state battery. If that does happen, the new 2026 MG4 EV could well be the world’s first EV to have a semi-solid-state battery.

The new MG4 EV dimensions are 4,395 x 1,842 x 1,551 mm (L x W x H). So it is around 108 mm longer than the outgoing model. It is now even bigger than the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3. Also, the wheelbase is now 2,750 mm, which is 45 mm longer than the previous one. This means that the car would be much more spacious inside. The vehicle also seems to have a better ground clearance.

Interestingly, the car weighs much less, 1,485 kg as compared to 1,641 kg of the last model. So most probably, the new model should also have much better performance.

New MG4 EV design

The new 2026 MG4 EV has a fresh new look with smoother curves as compared to the sharp lines of the previous model. The front reminds me of the Cyberster, with a large illuminated MG logo enhancing its brand recognition. The closed front grill, large L-shaped headlights, prominent nose, air ducts on either side, and an arched hood enhance its sense of performance.

From the side, the car has a more rounded hatchback shape as compared to the last one with traditional door handles and petal-shaped wheels. It comes with a longer wheelbase and shorter front and rear overhangs, a design feature mostly seen in sports cars.

The rear features arrow-shaped taillights similar to the Cyberster with a full-length light bar, a high roof spoiler, and a large MG logo.

The interior is spacious, and MG has collaborated with tech giant OPPO to provide features like gesture-based navigation, voice control, and smartphone mirroring, wherein there is no need to download apps. The new MG4 will be the first to be equipped with the OPPO Intelligent Car Connectivity Ecosystem. It has a large floating screen at the center with an additional LCD instrument panel.

The vehicle will be equipped with an L2+ driving assistance system. With Huawei and Xiaomi already doing well with their auto technology, it will be fascinating to see how OPPO’s technology stands against them.

New 2026 MG4 EV : In short

The new MG4 EV is a step forward in both design and technology. MG had fallen far behind in its home market, with BYD, Nio, Volkswagen, and others taking the lead in the compact hatchback market. The new MG4 will try to reverse this trend. SAIC also plans to launch 13 new energy products within the next two years.

The new MG4 beats the competition on size, but if SAIC can price it well, we could see the new MG4 back in the race in its home market.

With more details to be officially released from SAIC, we shall be following it up too.

So, what do you think of the new MG4?
