Meet the Fastest Car in the World @ 496.22 km/h

Recently at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg test track in Germany, the BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme unleashed a top speed of 496.22 km/h (308.4 mph), making it the fastest car in the world among production models. That’s not just a new record; it’s a seismic shift from the gas-guzzling performance super cars.

At 490.5 km/h (304.7 mph) back in 2019, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ stood at the pinnacle of internal combustion performance. Now, an EV from China has stolen the spotlight, proving that the future isn’t just green—it’s also blisteringly fast.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for everyone in the research and development division. I extend my gratitude to the whole team and my thanks to the driver, Marc Basseng, for his skill and technical input. It’s terrific that the fastest production car in the world is now electric,” says BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme created some other world records as well

Not just the 496.22 km/h speed record for the fastest car in the world, the BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme also created a number of other records as follows:

1. World’s first series-produced 1,200V platform vehicle

The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme is the world’s first series-produced vehicle to use a 1,200V ultra-high voltage platform with a lithium iron phosphate blade battery having a remarkable discharge rate of 30C.

2. Most powerful production car at 3,000 HP

The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme boasts a jaw-dropping output of 3,000 HP (2,237 KW), creating a world record for the highest horsepower of any mass-production vehicle.

3. World’s fastest electric motors at 30,000 rpm

The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme uses four ultra-high-speed motors capable of operating up to 30,000 rpm. Each motor can deliver over 555 KW of power.

4. World’s first ultra-high voltage and fully active body control system

BYD’s proprietary DiSusX Intelligent Body Control System is built on this 1,200 V ultra-high voltage platform. This game-changing innovation extends the boundaries of the car’s safety and performance on the track. Simultaneously, while reducing body roll, DiSus-X enhances tire-to-road contact force, thereby improving the vehicle’s grip performance.

5. The world’s largest carbon-fiber monocoque

The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme utilizes over 110 kg of aerospace-grade high-performance carbon fiber, which has a density of just a fifth of steel but has five to six times its strength.

6. Fastest lap time on the Nürburgring circuit by a production car

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme not only created a top speed world record but also cracked the Nürburgring lap in a time period of 6:59.157, surpassing the previous Xiaomi SU7 Ultra’s production EV record time of 7:04.957.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Price

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme production is limited to only 30 units. Though the price of the Yangwang U9 Xtreme has not yet been revealed by BYD, we can expect it to be much higher than the USD 236,174 (¥1,680,000) starting price of the U7.

Even then the U9 Xtreme is going to be much more competitive than its million-dollar competitors, and it won’t be surprising to see these units being gone in seconds.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Review: In short

According to BYD, the vehicle’s name is derived from the English word ‘Extreme,’ meaning ‘limit’ and ‘ultimate,’ with added emphasis on the ‘X,’ which represents the unknown. Think of it as BYD’s answer to Bugatti, Koenigsegg, etc.

The U9 had already created a lot of buzz among auto enthusiasts with its jumping and dancing ability, but the U9 Xtreme is its weaponized version, breaking a lot of world records in performance and technology.

“This record was only possible because the U9 Xtreme simply has incredible performance. Technically, something like this is not possible with a combustion engine. Thanks to the electric motor, the car is quiet, and there are no load changes, and that allows me to focus even more on the track,” says Marc Basseng, BYD’s record-breaking racing driver.

This wasn’t just a win for BYD; it represents the rise of an electric era. Europe and America have long dominated the speed wars with brands like Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Rimac. But China’s EV start-ups like BYD, NIO, and Xiaomi are now crashing the party.
