Is this the Dawn of the Future Maybach – Meet Mercedes Vision Iconic

The Mercedes Vision Iconic concept is more than a show car—it’s a provocative statement of Mercedes’ future vision of a “New Iconic Era” that blends the Art Deco aesthetics of the 1930s golden era with cutting-edge technologies that will define the future.

This two-door coupe has been inspired by the brand’s rich heritage, especially the legendary 300 SL, and a futuristic, illuminating grille that was first seen in the all-new GLC model. Even if the Mercedes Vision Iconic concept doesn’t see the green light, it may definitely inspire the design of future Maybach and Mercedes S Class models.

The Vision Iconic’s silhouette is a master class in retro-futurism design. At the heart of this design is the iconic chrome radiator grille inspired by legendary models such as the W108, W111, and the 600 Pullman. The illuminated grille and star aren’t mere aesthetics—they’re interactive, pulsing with ambient light to signal modes or alerts. The bold grille is complemented by slim and modern headlights.

Inside the Mercedes Vision Iconic concept, the star attraction is the instrument panel that displays data in fluid, adaptive holograms. The centerpiece of the instrument panel is a floating glass structure called “Zeppelin,” a refined interplay of analog and digital instruments.

A continuous front bench seat in deep blue velvet evokes the 1930s opulence of the 300 SL with fine craftsmanship and exclusive materials, while the four-spoke steering wheel cradles a floating Mercedes logo in a glass sphere, like a jewel on display.

“Inspired by the golden era of automotive design of the 1930s, this show car embodies the pure essence of Mercedes Benz. With its hood giving it a majestic presence, sculptural flowing lines, and a touch of Art Deco, it rises to become a true icon of automotive beauty. The interior, with its continuous bench seat and the elegant rear, evokes memories of the legendary 300 SL. Our Vision Iconic is more than just an automobile—it is a sculpture in motion, a homage to timeless elegance, and a statement for the future,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

Mercedes Vision Iconic Technologies

Beneath its glamorous shell, the Vision Iconic pulses with innovations that could redefine not only the brands but also the future electric vehicle ecosystem.

Mercedes solar paint

Innovative solar coating for additional range

The Mercedes Vision Iconic features innovative solar modules applied to the bodywork like a wafer-thin paste. An average SUV with around 11 sq. mtr. surface area could generate enough energy for 12,000 km in a year. The coating is free from rare earths and silicon and recyclable. Having a high efficiency of 20%, they can generate energy even when the vehicle is switched off.

Neuromorphic computing

Neuromorphic computing revolutionizes energy efficiency by being 10 times more efficient than current systems. Features like autonomous driving and ADAS require more energy. Vision Iconic’s neuromorphic computing mimics the human brain, thereby processing the AI calculations much faster and utilizing 90% less energy than current systems.

New steer-by-wire system

The steer-by-wire system offers more safety and an unparalleled driving experience with improved maneuverability and handling. This technology doesn’t require a mechanical connection between the steering and the wheels but instead relies on electrical control units and actuators.

Level 4 Autonomous Driving

The Mercedes Vision Iconic is equipped with LiDAR’s for Level 4 autonomous driving. Upon activating the system on a highway, the driver can relax or even take a nap. This would enable the user to arrive at his destination, relaxed and refreshed. The vehicle also parks by itself.

Mercedes Vision Iconic as the Future Maybach & S Class

What sets the Vision Iconic apart isn’t its cutting-edge technologies, but how it all harmonizes into a cohesive luxury experience. The Vision Iconic isn’t destined for dealerships, but its ripples will definitely reshape Mercedes’ future lineup. It previews a potential electric Mercedes S-Class coupe, infusing the flagship with Art Deco drama and autonomy that could make the chauffeur unnecessary.

How the future Maybach and S Class may look in Vision Iconic’s design has been well imagined by Sugar Chow, a virtual artist who is better known as “sugardesign_1” on social media platforms.

“Vision Iconic embodies our vision for the future of mobility. With groundbreaking innovations such as neuromorphic computing, steer-by-wire, solar paint, and Level 4 highly automated driving, along with state-of-the-art technology, we are setting new standards for the electric and digital age. This beautiful vehicle is a testament to our commitment to making the mobility of tomorrow a reality today,” says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes Benz Group AG.
