Performance and Specifications

The Hyundai INITIUM goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 sec and has a motor output of 200 HP (150 kW).

The vehicle is expected to have a maximum range of over 650 km (404 miles). No further technical information has been revealed so far.

Design

The Hyundai INITIUM has a unique boxy design, and it’s the first vehicle under Hyundai’s new design language called ‘Art of Steel.’ It emphasizes the beauty of the shapes steel can be molded into due to its natural elastic property.

It has a bold, futuristic, high-tech SUV-like aesthetic, ready to take on urban roads and outdoor adventures. Features that stand out are its square lights, even on the roof rack; a big, broad bumper; big fender flares; large 21-inch wheels; and a prominent roof rack. All these give it a sophisticated, sturdy appearance.

Hyundai has also fitted INITIUM with special aerodynamic wheels that help in reducing drag. The vehicle was showcased in a brilliant gold matte shade that symbolizes the energy of metal.

The Hyundai INITIUM should offer plenty of interior space and will feature an FCEV-specific route planner depicting charging stations along the way. Advanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), and nine airbags have been incorporated to enhance safety.

The interior design photos and details have not yet been released.

In short

The Hyundai INITIUM reflects Hyundai’s vision towards future hydrogen technology that it has been working on for the past 27 years. Hyundai was the first to mass-produce hydrogen FCEVs in 2018. Jae Hoon Chang describes it as an unwavering commitment, bold moves, and unyielding resolve.

As former Hyundai Chairman Mong-Koo Chung had once said. “You can never make something great by creating it just once.”

INITIUM is a futuristic, bold-looking FCEV SUV concept that seems to integrate both urban lifestyles with outdoor capability.

Hydrogen vehicles have had limited success up till now, probably due to limited refueling infrastructure, the higher cost of hydrogen vehicles, and limited government initiative to promote it. Will hydrogen technology finally succeed in automobiles? Time will only tell.
