Recently, Swedish startup Einride became the first company to deploy a fully autonomous heavy-duty truck on Belgium’s public road at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. With this, Belgium and Europe now seem to be taking the lead in autonomous freight technology.
This demonstration at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges wasn’t just a mere stunt, but Einride’s trucks handled the inter-terminal hauls with precision, dodging pedestrians, cyclists, and fellow vehicles while adhering to local traffic laws. Actually, we are now witnessing the beginning of a greener, smarter future in freight movement.
“Antwerp is more than a logistical hub: it is also a place where the mobility of tomorrow is tested and concretized. Autonomous and sustainable applications such as Einride’s prove that innovation is a driver for competitiveness and economic growth,” says Johan Klaps, chairman of the board of directors of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Antwerp port alderman.

About Einride
Founded in 2016, Einride is a Swedish startup that designs, develops, and deploys freight mobility technologies. In 2019, Einride was the first company to operate an autonomous electric vehicle on a public road. Today, Einride operates one of the world’s biggest fleets of heavy-duty autonomous semi trucks across the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
“Now in our third European country, Einride continues to demonstrate success in securing permits and achieving first-of-their-kind deployments. Today in Antwerp, we’re proud to showcase a clear example of how innovation and regulation can be balanced for safer, more efficient, and sustainable logistics,” says Henrik Green, CTO and General Manager for Einride Autonomous Technologies.

Einride Technology
At the core of Einride’s triumphs lies a suite of proprietary technologies that blend autonomous vehicles, charging infrastructure, an intelligent freight operating system, and human oversight into a harmonious whole. The whole operation is run by the Einride’s Saga platform, a cloud-based “digital brain” that can control vehicle fleets, optimize routes, and predict maintenance.

Their Autonomous Electric Trucks (AETs) are cabless and designed in-house for maximum efficiency and minimal environmental footprint. They use precision sensors, LiDAR, and cameras, which enable them to take real-time decisions even in complex environments.
Einride’s solution integrates seamlessly, using remote monitoring to oversee operations much like air traffic control for trucks.

Einride at DP World, Dubai
Einride’s Belgian breakthrough is no isolated event; last year it had partnered with DP World to electrify the inter-terminal container flow at its Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. The Jebel Ali Port is the world’s 9th busiest port, and this would improve efficiency and sustainability.
Einride and DP World expect the operations to finally scale up to 1,600 container movements daily utilizing a fleet of 100 connected autonomous electric trucks being managed through Einride’s platform. At that level, it is expected to save 14,600 tons of carbon dioxide and 158 tons of nitrogen oxides annually—equivalent to removing thousands of cars from the road.

“DP World is committed to making trade smarter, faster, and more sustainable, and our new partnership with Einride aligns perfectly with our vision. Our partnership will drive greater operational efficiencies, further decarbonize terminal operations, and pioneer greener practices for the logistics sector,” said Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC.

Einride’s Future
Einride has successfully developed technologies to manage a fleet of autonomous semi trucks remotely which can lead to an enormous saving in costs and emissions. With world-renowned organizations now partnering with Einride, their future looks bright. It also intends to introduce trailers in future.

From Dubai to Antwerp, Einride’s tech is proving that autonomous freight isn’t just a distant dream but rather a deployable reality. As Einride’s autonomous pods hum across the world, the message is clear: the era of fossil-fueled, human-driven logistics is fading.
In a world racing toward net-zero, Einride’s blend of autonomy, electrification, and intelligence isn’t just innovative; it’s imperative. The road ahead looks to have many more silent, autonomous electric trucks.
