Can VW Scout Motors revive its Iconic past with the new Terra & Traveler

Scout Motors recently unveiled the Scout Terra truck and the Scout Traveler SUV as two production-intended concept vehicles. The production is expected to be in 2027, and it will be among the first to use the new Zonal Architecture built by the joint venture of VW and Rivian. Scout Motors is presently owned by VW.

Built to be bold, rugged, and resilient, the traits that are rooted in its heritage making the original an icon of the 1960s-80s. The Scout Motors Terra and Traveler are targeted at adventure seekers, DIY experts, and city dwellers who aren’t afraid to head off-course.

Scout Motors Terra and Traveler prices will start at USD 50,000 with available incentives in the US. Retail prices starting under USD 60,000.

“The original core idea—rugged, versatile vehicles capable of off-road adventure and family duty—is more relevant than ever. We couldn’t be prouder to revitalize this iconic American brand, create thousands of American jobs, and put American ingenuity back to work.”

Scott Keogh, President and CEO of Scout Motors

Design

The new models from Scout Motors seem to take design inspiration from the original Scout models that were made by International Harvester during 1961-80.

A bold, iconic design with broad shoulders and up to 35-inch tires gives it not only a rugged appeal but also an improved off-road capability as well. It’s an amalgam of modern and traditional styling.

The Scout Motors Traveler SUV is available with a Cabana Top expected to be one of the largest roof openings of any SUV, providing an unmatched open-air experience. The Scout Motors Terra truck comes with a large 5.5 ft bed.

Enter the Scout, and you will find a simple and bold design philosophy. From mechanical door handles to switches and dials, the Scout will give a real practical experience. The dashboard has a horizontal layout with a large screen, knobs, and toggle switches.

With the latest infotainment system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, the vehicle will also feature over-the-air (OTA) updates and remote diagnostics.

Scout Motors: In Short

The VW Scout Motors is trying to revive the iconic Scout brand, famous for its off-road handling and capability during 1960-80, with the introduction of two new models. Both Scout Traveler and Scout Terra have taken their design inspiration from the Scout models of the past, trying to keep the spirit alive.

“A Scout vehicle should always be a helpful companion. It should always enable the customer to do the things they want to do and make their experience easier, better, and faster.”

Chris Benjamin, Chief Design Officer, Scout Motors.

Now being part of the VW group, Scout can get a lot of technical expertise and invaluable experience from VW. But can VW revive the Scout brand to its past glory? Only time will tell.
