BYD revealed its new Denza Z concept in pure blue opal color at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, a step into the high-performance luxury car market. Launched under its premium Denza brand, this striking sports car is designed to take on automotive icons like the Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.

Denza is a premium brand under BYD, which was initially started in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz but is now fully owned by BYD. It primarily focuses on luxury EVs.

BYD Denza Z Performance

Not many details have been revealed by BYD Denza on the vehicle’s technical specifications or performance. But looking at BYD’s Yangwang U9, we can expect the Denza Z to have a tri-motor or quad-motor setup with over 1,000 HP output and around 2 seconds of 0-100 km/h acceleration. This would make it one of the top contenders in the premium, high-performance electric sports car market.

Like its siblings, we can expect the car to perform crab walks and 360-degree tank turns. BYD Denza describes it as “Elegance in motion,” a perfect blend of design and performance.

Technology

BYD has been showcasing many innovative technologies, especially with its Yangwang brand. Vehicles that can jump, dance, and swim. It too launched its latest model, the U8L SUV, at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Now the Denza Z comes with a foldable steering wheel. This would give the driver around 14% more space while the vehicle is parked or while getting in or out of the vehicle. Also, an auto-folding steering wheel is an additional safety feature in case of a collision.

Design

The Denza Z is a four-seater, two-door coupe design similar to the Porsche 911 or Mercedes-AMG GT, offering both performance and practicality.

With angular headlights reminiscent of a Lamborghini and graceful curves of a Ferrari, this sleek coupe is designed to turn heads. While its compact dimensions, low front end, smooth aerodynamic lines, fender deflectors, frameless windows, carbon fiber roof, hidden door handles, and adjustable rear spoiler enhance its sporty and sleek silhouette.

Inside, the Denza Z offers a futuristic cockpit that balances luxury and performance. The cabin features a digital instrument screen, a large central infotainment touchscreen, and a slim passenger-side display, complemented by physical buttons.

Carbon fiber is extensively used on its central console, door panels, and seats to not only reduce weight but also to give it a premium feel. A high-strength roll bar cage is provided in the track version.

Denza Z Pricing

While the price for the Denza Z has not yet been revealed, it is expected to be very competitive in its class. While the Yangwang U9 costs over a million RMB, the Denza Z could very well be less than half of that. With prices undercutting the competing Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini models, the Denza Z could stand as a serious contender in its segment.

Denza is slowly expanding globally, with plans to launch both in Europe and Australia this year. However, breaking into the brand-conscious luxury car market will not be easy. Whether buyers will embrace a new brand over established names, time will tell.

Denza Z—In short

The Denza Z is more than a concept; it’s a statement of intent from BYD Denza. By combining supercar-like performance, innovative technology, and an affordable price, the Denza Z challenges the status quo of the traditional brands. The combination of BYD’s cost advantage with its continuous new innovation has already helped it to overtake Tesla both in sales and revenue.

But winning over traditional supercar enthusiasts won’t be easy. To compete with Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, BYD Denza will have to invest in creating an exclusive and desirable image among supercar buyers. But one thing is for sure: the legacy automakers can no longer ignore the threat, and the supercar world is about to get a lot more electric.
