Can Alfa Romeo Junior surprising start finally save Alfa Romeo

The new Alfa Romeo Junior sales have got off to a flying start, securing 22,000 orders in just a few weeks of its launch. This has even exceeded the expectations of the company. Alfa Romeo had been struggling for the past couple of years, with sales peaking in 2001 at 213,638 units and now down to around 60,000 units in 2024. But the amazing response received by Alfa Romeo Junior must have brought in new confidence and enthusiasm within the company. So can the success of the Junior finally help to boost Alfa Romeo’s results?

“At the Brussels International Motor Show, I shared the optimistic goal of 20,000 Junior units by late January. For me, exceeding expectations can therefore only act as confirmation of how well the project is going and of the great work of our dealer network,” Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo CEO.

The Junior is the smallest Alfa Romeo and was originally launched as the Alfa Romeo Milano but later renamed due to an objection from the Italian government for using an Italian name on a car being built in Poland. This small Alfa Romeo SUV has been offered in both hybrid and electric versions. The Alfa Romeo Junior price is between Euro 39,500 and 48,500 for the EV version and between Euro 29,900 and 37,400 for the hybrid version.

Performance

Alfa Romeo Junior offers a decent luxury performance in both the electric and hybrid versions. In the electric version, its top variant, the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce offers 280 HP (207 KW) of power and 345 Nm (255 ft-lbs) of torque, which can accelerate it from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h (125 mph). While the standard variant offers the maximum drive range of 410 km.

In the hybrid version, its standard variant offers 145 HP (108 KW) of power and 230 Nm (170 ft-lbs) of torque, which can accelerate it from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 206 km/h (128 mph). While it’s the top variant, the Junior Hybrid Q4 offers higher trim levels and an eAWD system. Also, the Hybrid Special variant offers the best fuel consumption at 4.8 liters/100 km.

Design of the new Alfa Romeo SUV

Alfa Romeo had been plagued with a limited range and unappealing designs. But the Junior came in with a refreshing look, practicality, and performance that has resonated well with the consumers. It is based on the Stellantis e-CMP2 platform, which is shared by other models like the Jeep Avenger, Peugeot E-2008, and Fiat 600e.

A notable change has been the moving of the Alfa Romeo badge from the front to on top of the bonnet. Also, the traditional triangular grill is much better incorporated in the vehicle’s design. The sleek “3+3” adaptive full LED matrix headlights just add to its appeal. It has keyless door opening/closing and hidden rear door handles. Overall, the Junior is much better-looking than all other Alfa Romeo SUV.

Inside, this Alfa Romeo SUV provides a spacious interior and premium features. At the center is an infotainment and navigation system with a 10.25-inch display. Key features include an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), a ‘Hey Alfa’ virtual voice assistant, Level 2 autonomous driving, lane centering and traffic jam assist, road sign recognition, an electronic interior rearview mirror, a wireless charging pad, and a panoramic roof.

This small Alfa Romeo SUV still offers 415 liters of cargo space, which can be increased to 1,280 with the rear seats folded. At around 4 meters long, it is a mid-size SUV suitable for daily driving in urban living.

Challenges

The small Alfa Romeo SUV is a mid-size crossover that’s perfectly suitable for daily driving in an urban living environment. In this segment it will be competing with the likes of the Volvo EX30, BMW X1, Lexus LBX, Audi Q4 e-tron, VW ID.4, Hyundai Kona, etc.

While it offers decent performance figures, it may still lag some of its competitors in terms of its 410 km electric range and 100 kW charging speed. So Alfa Romeo will have to address these issues quickly, especially with new Chinese brands entering the market offering innovative features and the best EV technology.

The Alfa Romeo Junior may also eat into the sales of its sibling SUVs, with potential buyers of the Tonale and Stelvio shifting to the new Junior. So the Junior’s success may be at the expense of other models. As it is cheaper, overall revenue may also be affected.

Alfa Romeo, as being part of the huge multi-branded Stellantis group, at times doesn’t get the attention and resources it deserves in order to recover. Naturally the focus goes to the best-performing brands and models. Also, the brand doesn’t have the same appeal in many growing markets as it has in its homeland, Europe. Stellantis/Alfa Romeo will have to step up the marketing effort in these markets if they wish to improve sales beyond their strongholds.

Alfa Romeo Junior review : In short

Ever since its launch, this smallest Alfa Romeo SUV has had an amazing start, notching up sales of 22,000 units within just a few weeks. With Alfa Romeo’s recent struggles, it seems like the Alfa Romeo Junior could be the savior that Alfa Romeo desperately needs at present.

With its eye-appealing looks, features, and a competitive price range of Euro 29,900–48,500, the Alfa Romeo Junior seems to have resonated well with the customers. As the consumers preferences shift towards electric vehicles and compact SUVs, the Junior seems to have also arrived at the right time. It has also helped Alfa Romeo to widen its customer base. However, Alfa Romeo will have to work on improving its electric range and 100 kW charging speed, which may be presently lagging behind some of its competitors.

At present it has only been launched in Europe and will soon be followed by Japan, the USA, and others. So if this smallest Alfa Romeo SUV gets a similar response in other markets too, it could significantly boost the brand’s volume and restore confidence in the brand’s future.

So can the flying start of this small Alfa Romeo SUV revive the company’s fortune? The Alfa Romeo Junior does have the right ingredients to succeed—striking design, brand image, decent features, timely market entry, and competitive pricing. For now, the Junior looks like a promising step that can inspire the next generation of other models in Alfa Romeo’s lineup. The Alfa Romeo Junior is therefore a step in the right direction but may not come out as a sole savior; the other models will also have to follow suit.

What do you think? Can the Alfa Romeo Junior save the brand, or is it too little, too late? 🚗⚡
