The Volvo ES90 teases 700 km range with 300 km adding up in just 10 mins

The automotive world is eagerly awaiting the Volvo ES90 2025, codenamed V551, which is scheduled to be launched on 5th Mar, 2025. This will be a new addition to Volvo’s growing lineup of electric vehicles. Volvo has been growing steadily in the past decade, and the new Volvo ES90 is expected to supplement it further.

Volvo wants to have half of its sales in 2025 to be electric and the rest hybrid. And by 2040, to be totally carbon-neutral. It is therefore expanding its electric and hybrid range while slowly cutting down on the pure ICE models.

Performance and Specifications

Though not much has been revealed so far, what we do know is that the Volvo ES90, which is codenamed V551, will have a WLTP range of 700 km (740 km under CLTC) on a single charge. The long-range version will be an all-wheel drive, twin motor, and equipped with a 106 kWh battery. Volvo’s newly developed in-house battery management software has reduced the charging time by 30%, now requiring only 20 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent.

The ES90 will be the first Volvo to be powered by an 800-volt technology, which will enable it to add 300 km of range in just 10 minutes of charging. In an 800-volt electric system, the electric system is more efficient, and the battery gets charged faster. Also, as the e-motors and other electric components are lighter in the case of an 800V system, the vehicles power, acceleration, and driving range are also improved.

“Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification. It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and helps you go further on a single charge,” says Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.

Design

Being based on the S90, the ES90 could be more or less of the same dimensions and shape. From the photos that have been teased so far, the Volvo ES90 appears to be a 4-door coupe type with a sloping roofline. The backlights are much like the S90 but also run up the rear glass.

As the ES90 is equipped with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration capable of handling 508 trillion operations per second, you can expect it to have state-of-the-art AI-based features inside the cockpit.

A lot of recycled materials are used, keeping efficiency and sustainability in mind. 29% of all aluminum, 18% of all steel, and 16% of polymers are recycled. Also, the wood panels inside are made from FSC-certified wood.

According to Volvo, the ES90 is designed to continuously evolve and improve over time in areas like safety, connectivity, and overall performance.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time. We innovate in all areas of technology to become a leader in software-defined cars, and we’re channeling all our engineering efforts into one direction: making great cars that get even better over time,” added Anders Bell.
